Another Uneventful Day

I am really starting to feel like my job is getting in the way of my knitting adventures. It seems like I am so tired when I get home that I don’t accomplish as much as I want. I think that I just need to take a few days off, it just seems like its never the right time for vaction. I made a little more progress on the bzzz hat today, but nothing spectacular. I’ve been listening to books on tape (technically, books on ipod) while I’m knitting which I prefer over watching TV. I discovered the Audible Web site a few weeks ago and they gave me 2 free books just for joining. I picked Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins and the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd which is the perfect companion to the bzzz hat. I don’t know yet if I am going to keep the service, but so far I really like “reading” and knitting at the same time.

I sometimes feel the same way about work and my outside work life. Though it doesn't get in the way of knitting, it does get in the way of being motivated to do anything creative.

If you like to "read" while you knit, there's a service where you can listen to movies while you knit. I tried finding the link but couldn't maybe you'll have better luck...

It's $14.95 for one book and special audio program and $21.95 for 2 books a month. Plus, once you are a member each additional book is $9.99 which is insanely cheap for audio books (at Borders they were $30-40 each). One thing to watch out for is the contractual offers. I think their goal is to entice you with free gifts to get you to sign a 1 year contract. Don't do it! The gifs are crap and once you are locked in you can't get out so if you lose interest you are stuck making payments. If you sign up on the front page of their site you get 2 free audio books with no contractual obligation so you can cancel before making your first payment if you don't like it. This is definately the best way to go.

I highly recommend downloading Harry Shearer's weekly Le Show -- it's free on Audible.com (go to www.audible.com/leshow). You don't have to surrender anything but a name and an e-mail address to get the site's free content--so they don't have my credit card or mailing address, etc.

If you don't already know, Harry Shearer is a multitalented political satirist, musician, filmmaker, and voice-over master (he does many of the voices on the Simpsons). He is also Derek Smalls, the bass player for Spinal Tap. He is a member of the Folksmen (Mighty Wind). He is also my hero.

Anyway, he does a great show that makes fun of the news and the newsmakers. He does all the voices--it's a one-man show. With the miracle of pre-recording, it sounds like several people having conversations and interrupting each other, etc. He does great impressions (Larry King, Dick Cheney, Bush senior and junior talking on the phone) and has several characters of his own. He also plays various contemporary and vintage songs from all kinds of artists in between segments. Dig it!
